The assault on the course record.
Good stuff.
A Record turn out and record course time at the Off Road Assult on Mt Mitchell this weeked.
Close to 400 racers made the start but with 11,000ft of climbing cramed into only 55 miles and tricky rooted trails it became an impossible test for some to pass.
After a tough first hr of climbing and trails we hit a long section of road where the race congealed into a lead group consisting of Charlie Storm (Inland Construction BTD), Sam Koerber, (Land Rover/Cannondale) and Thomas Turner (Bare Naked/ Cannondale) and me. On the massive final ascent to Mitchel 40 miles in Charlie Storm burried the needle droping the inpired Turner. I droped the hammer as soon as he slowed on the blue ridge parkway to make the separation that would stick to the finish some 15 miles away.
Promoter; Todd Branham was surprised to see the new course record of 5:08 (seven minutes faster than last year) and offered a 500 dollar bonus to any one to beat the new standing record for the Assault on Mt Mitchell. Thats $1000 to a new record!
There was alot of talk at this race about the upcomming 100 milers, the Wilderness 101 and the Shenandoah 100 it seems like the the endurance bug has really bitten.
See ya at the wilderness 101.
