Asheville VeloSports Mountain Bike Camp
This weekend, Erin and I had a great time in Asheville, NC.
The camp hosted by Lesli, Kurt and Billy Mac at Asheville VeloSports and included 2 and a half days of lessons, gourmet meals, trailside lunches, give-away raffled Trek VW gear and a few yard sales (nothing was sold though). The class room lessons were mostly given by Kurt and me, and were followed by real trail time where it all came together. The practice really paid off, everyone this weeked ended up riding something they didn't expect to, I know I did. It is always a great feeling to pass on my the love of mountian biking to others. I am sure I will see our riders out on the trail someday, or at a race riding with new found confidence and speed!
Go practice outside of your normal bounds.

Points?
I guess there weren't many takers on the points competition for the Daily Grind. There were 10 or so in attendence, some hearty cold weather riders looking for some speed work. I had some hill jamms to do and the pace was fast. XXX Todd is prepping for the World Police and Fire Fighter Games gold medal defense.
Good Luck Todd. We know you can do it again!
Back to the ride. .Like I said it was COLD and I was looking to make some body heat on the climbs we set out on a loop local legend Paul Buchi showed me a few years back. I simply call it the Valley Hills Loop. Sound easy right. Wrong. It is 60 miles and has 6500 ft of climbing and it's all on short steep hills so the slay you legs!!
The final strech was wound up by Andy Young Blood Mckeegan and Kyle Super Style Lawrence. With Todd and I in tow. I decided enough was enough and became a spectator as the trio raced to the top of the hill on Mt. Clinton pike.
With much panache Kyle took the town limit sprint from Todd and Andy.
I will be in Asheville next weekend for the Mountain Bike Clinic being held by Asheville Velo Sports. Should be a blast.
Asheville is fun place with great trails and awesome outdoors people everywhere.
Time to go ski the snow is a flying here in Virginia.

Last of the Indian Summer?
The weather has been well..... a bit strange. I rode most of the rides this week in shorts and short sleeves! The buds and bulbs are sprouting and so are out of time urges to race.
I was shocked to see the group of 10 or so multi colored riders zooming over the hill. I rode out to meet them from the Gym 15 minutes into the ride. Seems the warm weather had everyone iching to ride.
The warmth had us riding hard for the sprints and though I am no sprinter and was at the end of a big block, I wanted to make fun on the Sat group ride. I made Brian work for the sprint title wich he has won the second week strait! He is a scrapper and despite the cattie efforts of El Gato and the the tidwater turbo of Justin he would put on the snapp. I think he's a born sprinter. Next time we will have a climbers ride...
So the weather looks as if it will turn a little more like, winter and we will put the gloves back on and go hit the trails.
Who know if we get lucky there may be a trip to whitgrass in the cards.

Texas Cornfed.
Today was the first winter points ride of 2007. Fast!
My bud Bryan Fawley is visiting this week for the winter training camp. A.k.a cornfed as they call him in Texas, Brian's got that running back sprint style that is hard for us climbers to challenge, he threw down on today's points. I am not much of a sprinter but managed to snach one from quadzilla and Andy whent long for the Augusta county homeland. Brian paid for his huge effort by cramping on our 90 min extra credit ride.
We had a great crew today that included El Gato; Andy McKeegan who had it on a nice diesel mode today, Grant hell marry Paterson, Nick Waite, and guest rider Dave Crippen.
The gamers where really just Bryan and Andy. These two hot heads instigating the flurry of attacks for the town line prize.
A super nice day well spent hammering out some country roads and of course talkin smack. :)

Pumping Iron
Man..
I was thinking it would be a great spoof of the classic body building movie with Arnold and Lou Forigno. Except features Nick Wait and I in our spandex with those little 5 pound dumbbells the girls use in the aerobics class.
We were in Gold's Gym aka (meat heads anonymous) today and I could help but smile when I heard the barbarian grunts and slamming of weights against the ground. What are we doing here? These 2 dudes with the combined IQ of a sweet potato said "I would wanna get in a tussle with that dude, he's huge". Little did they know that the little dude across the room in KBS green is a bad ass athlete. I rolled my eyes and got back to task. This experiment seems to be working and Nick and I have both noticed a good feeling balance of fitness. As for the quantitative wattage data, it will be a few months but the indications are good.
So maybe pumping iron is not so bad after all.
Go for it!

Last of the Candy Cane Bread

Tis the season for training.
Today I ate the last of the holiday bread that is a North family tradition it just looks like a candy cane and is really more of a fruit filled sweet bread.
I mention this because it is symbolic of the end of the holidays. They were good yes? Lots of food, family and fun, gifts traditions and music abound.
Now it is time to look forward the training will be easy to associate with the coming race season and the toughest work is about to begin. If you are coached by Hunter Allen then you will know what I am talking about if not rent Rocky 3.
Go get some!
