Tech

I had a lot of fun at the Cannondale international sales meeting and learned more about the incredible plans that Cannondale has for the next year. You'll just have to stay tuned to find out more!

Here's a look at the worlds fasted townie! Now I just need some PBR stickers! There were so many cool bikes for 2010, but you will have to wait untill the cat comes out of the bag!

I had a fantastic time meeting all of the dealers and sharing the excitement about the new product line with the hard working team from Cannondale. And we all had a great time on the trails! I think everyone enjoyed the Raw Revolution bars and new EMV that I snuck into the show.

Before heading out of Park City, I stopped by White Pine Touring to load up on some last minute supplies for the Breck Epic and Marathon Nationals. Talk about an awesome touring shop! (More photos are up in the Gallery.)

Check out Dave's preview of the race ahead...

It's going to be a busy week as I get ready for the most exciting part of the year... summer time racing!

EMV Product Launch!

The MonaVie Cannondale Team was honored to present MonaVie's newest product EMV. Lasers, fireworks and 3,500 people filled the Salt Palace Convention Center. It was simulcasted in 12 different languages around the World!

The dude on the right likes doing 720's off cliffs, I just like riding for 7 hours twenty. Ha ha ha. Both are dangerous over the top and fun. With EMV's special product mantra "healthy sustained energy" I think we have the makings of a long lasting relationship because we live the healthy lifestyle and don't need the preservatives and chemicals of other drinks and most importantly epic racing requires staying power!

Father's Day was also our team photo shoot. Conrad is scoping out some sponsors so we had him join in on the shoot! What a ham!

Erin, the little guy and I are having a fun rocky mountain adventure. (More pics from the photo shoot and convention are up in the Gallery! And, if you like the new stars and stripes jersey and bibs, you can get them too.)

Well keep ya posted on what is next!

World's First Mountain Bike?

On Monday, on my way home from a 5-day training camp in Clemson, South Carolina, I stopped by First Flight Bikes to get a first-hand look at the new Museum of Mountain Bike Art and Technology. I'd first heard about the museum on CyclingNews, when they announced MOMBAT as the world's first museum of mountain bike art and technology.

When I read that press release, my first impression was that the museum would be a ramshackle collection of old bikes, but I was pleasantly surprised to see not only a great collection of mountain bikes and technology, including the first disc brakes, parallelogram forks, prototypes and incredible artwork, but that the size of the collection alone was impressive. In addition the the few priceless pieces in the main showroom and hanging on the perimeter of the ceilings, there was an entire upstairs and backroom of un-used cycling jerseys representing some of the first and finest teams in mountain biking.

Beyond the nostalgia and the beautiful machine working, and even a mountain bike with Campy components, I was also wowed by a mountain bike that had actual gold plated parts and a dazzling sunset paint job. don't ask me what possessed someone to gold plate their mountain bike parts, but it was rad.

Just when I had planned to depart, I walked by a rather unassuming prehistoric cruiser bike with fat tires and what looked like two forks attached to it. I didn't think much at first, but then it dawned on me, what I was looking at was a cruiser from the 60's that, unlike the cruisers of the early California repack downhills, was fully customized with a front suspension fork and modified trail climbing gear.

The bike (pictured above) was made in 1967 by Joe Bruman. Joe, you are the man! He took a 3-speed hub and attached a front hub to the back, added leverage to the brakes and the front suspension still works well today. Although some new tires would probably be recommended. firstflightbikes.com/1967_JCHiggins.htm

If you ever get a chance and you're on I77 near Charlotte, or anywhere on the east coast for that matter, you should make plans to go to this place. It is really, really cool! Plans for the future include placards and stories for some of the more prized pieces of the collection.

It's been a great week of riding and I'm finalizing the details for a fantastic 2009 racing season! Tomorrow I head to Washington and Lee to speak at the Institute for Honor symposium Sports in America: Playing Fair.
Check back soon for the exciting news!

Call to Action

The future of American mountain bike racing's place in the world is at stake.

America invented the sport of mountain biking, and yet poor management and a lack of marketing have driven our national racing scene off the map. Remember when crowds of photographers, reporters, and television crews flanked the finish lines of the national events, and the top professionals from around the world came to compete in the most successful racing series on earth right here in the United States?

Wake up people, it’s time to do more than talk about what could be better and pick up the shovel. And now, thank god there is someone with the balls to propose something dynamic exciting and new! Scott Tedro and Sho-Air International are proven successful. Tedro is the president of a multi-million dollar cooperation. Not only does this dude get it, he has DONE it. And now, he is willing to share this experience and some serious financial backing to reinvigorate the United States' racing scene!

It is important that people care about the health of mountain bike racing in America and it is a good sign to see the up swell of comments on the topic. Good points have been made, and I agree with many of them.

Some people have questioned how this new series be different? There are major reasons:
Marketing! Marketing! Marketing!
Advertising
Pre-event Media Campaigns
Internet, TV Coverage
Top Rider, Team School Visits
Action Race Calendar Backed by USAC
Mountain Bike Action (I love U!) Monthly "Ride with the Pro Contests"

Logistics
It costs less to drive less. With the key races within a 1-hour drive of major markets this encourages more spectators and racers.

A group of events that includes Sea Otter means that teams and riders can benefit from doing one less “national” and focusing on the racing that is best in our country. I am lobbying for the Cactus Cup in Las Vegas to be part of the series for its continuity with these ideas.

Innovation makes this series different than anything before it.
Stage races; Mountain Bike Action style short courses; Major prize money that will attract top international riders and increase the “stakes” adding to the suspense and raising the perceived integrity of events among spectators.

The United States needs the UCI points to get its young riders to the World Championships and to qualify for Olympic spots. The future of our Olympic athletes depends on these efforts.

This effort will be a work in progress, but something good with great aspirations, is better than nothing at all.

Join me in endorsing this concept and spreading the hope that it is part of the answer. Please add your comments of support to the forum linked here.

Thank you!

Max VO2, Filming

Saturday was the first day of fiming for the feature motion picture "Max VO2: The Potential Inside." The Hollywood crew will be working hard over the next 27 days as they capture the bulk of the scenes on location. I'll be on set again today, for more of the racing sequences and some light improvisation with the lead character "Jake." It's pretty impressive to see all that goes into the making of a real feature film with the crew and all the serious equipment.

Next weekend is going to be even more exciting when filming will take place at the Assualt on Libery Mountain, a real race in Lynchburg, Virginia. If you haven't already planned to attend, you might want to check it out (link on the events page). There will be all the usual racing classes with cash and prizes, and it's rumored that there will be serious amounts of spectators - possiblly thousands from the areas colleges - to get a chance to be on the big screen. If you enter the race, you could be in the movie too!

Some more photos are up in the Gallery (or use the link at left, follow to "Industry" gallery).

More news later today about exciting changes that could be taking place on the national racing scene!

Oh, Canada!

My week in the north east was fun. Most of the time between the two World Cup races was spent in Burlington, Vermont hanging with Lea Davison and her crew.

Up in Bromont, Canada, the rain came in sheets and the mud was even worse than expected. My last World Cup of the season wrapped up in style (17th place) though it started about as well as bull running through a china shop with a wet floor!

Right after the first climb, we did a short descent and I tried not to get caught behind a wreck, but as I corrected my course my front wheel slid and I crashed!

At first I thought I had surely broken my ring and pinky fingers. Last time I checked, fingers aren't supposed to bend backwards at the joint like that! OUCH.

I did what I always do if I'm not unconscious and got back on the bike and assessed the situation while riding. The good thing was that I could still hold onto the bars and came on strong at the end of the race. I battled it out with a surging Carl Decker, and just caught Karl Markt from Germany on the last section of trail. Mud is fun to ride in sometimes, but it always makes for exciting racing!

Now I am just chilling at home with Erin and catching up with some busy stuff.

Next on the radar for me is an appearance at the Tour de Skyline this Saturday. If you are a man who's over 40 years old - or who wants to live past 40, check out this link www.ProstateCancerAwarenessProject.org

The event has filled up, but if you show up randomly to ride Skyline Drive this Saturday morning at 8:30 I may see you there. We're riding halfway, staying at Skyland Lodge and then finishing up on Sunday.

Also congrads to Leah who bagged her first top 10 finish in Bromont. NICE!

Cheers,
JB

Rent's Due

I'm actually talking about paying the planet.

You might think I'm crazy or that I've spent too much of my time listening to the song Beds are Burning from Midnight Oil.

The time has come
To say 'fair's fair'
To pay the rent
To pay our share
The time has come
A fact's a fact
It belongs to them
Let's give it back

For now, I'm talking carbon emissions. All of us can reduce our emissions by driving less and biking more. Sounds good to me! But, what about the miles that we can't seem to avoid driving? You've probably heard about carbon off-setting.

I admit that I was skeptical about the latest crop of carbon-offsetting programs, until I did some research and learned more about the process. For example, did you know it could take as few as four trees to offset one TON of carbon?

One of my sponsors - Volkswagen - has partnered with CarbonFund.org Foundation to offset one year's carbon emissions for all new Volkswagen purchases made in the US, now through January 2. This Volkswagen Carbon Neutral Project has also made it easy for current VW drivers (like me) to calculate and offset their yearly emissions.

Contributions to CarbonFund.org support carbon-reducing programs focused on renewable energy, energy efficiency and re-forestation. Contributions specifically made to the Volkswagen Carbon Neutral Project will fund the re-forestation of 1,100 acres of the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, a.k.a. the "VW Forest." Strategically planted in this fertile valley, the VW Forest will grow quickly and benefit from a long growing season each year. That's cool, eh?

I joined the Volkswagen Carbon Neutral Project with a donation of $59.24. This offset the 25,000 miles Erin and I have driven in the VW Jetta and 6,000 (slightly faster) miles driven in my new Trek/VW GTI.

Even if your auto isn't a VW, you can participate. It's a cool thing to do. It takes just a little time and is inexpensive compared to the price we'll have to pay if we wait until later.

Get out there and do some good. Once you start, it's surprisingly easy.
Now, does anyone know where I can find a bicycle powered lawn mower?

Ciao,

JB

Making News

This is Erin, breaking free from Meanwhile and invading the main page (again).

Lately, I've enjoyed stumbling upon Trek/Volkswagen news almost everywhere I look.

Jeremiah and I hosted the guys from Bike Magazine a few weeks ago, and shortly thereafter were treated to a recap of the shenanigans Kip Mikler enjoyed while he was in Harrisonburg.

While we enjoyed the rugged east coast of the USA, Trek's Michael Browne was in Mexico on an adventure of his own with the new Remedy.

To top it off, Sue was making news as she conquered La Ruta de los Conquistadors!

Today, Jeremiah is out on an epic training ride with teammate Jeff Shalk. It's not often when they leave me with a map of their anticipated route. But on day's like this, when they do, there is an unspoken understanding that I'll be at the ready to launch a search an hour after sunset if there's been no sign of them. Some of my friends might think that's crazy, but it's just a regular day for me.

Lost Vegas

Yo,

Erin and I just returned from a whirlwind visit to the Interbike trade show in Vegas. Wow! It was fun seeing old friends and new bike gear.

Lea, a Trek/VW teammate, and I were sent to Vegas to provide hospitality and information at the Trek tents at the Dirt Demo. It was a huge success. I love the new EX so much I might have converted some non-Trek dealers to pick up the BALL! Trek also had a product launch that left dealers speechless. The new Remedy 9 was a show stopper for sure. I want one bad! Maybe if I am good, Santa will work it out.

After two days of outside fun, we moved inside for the main part of the show. I spent most of my time working the World Bicycle Relief booth. I think we generated some new interest within the industry, and I think the ball is starting to roll. Check out the link on my front page!

By day four, I finally had a chance to walk the miles of exhibitors that turned the convention center into a human rat maze of glitter and glam.

I literally got lost looking for Erin. There were so many people there that you could get separated like at a rock concert. I was stoked to meet a lot of the people who make it happen; our sponsors of course. Cytomax had one of the best displays of the show. It was great to see Steve Blick with Oakley and my buds Than and Dave with Shimano and Rock Shox!

I am glad to be back home to catch up with what it's all about!

Gone riding right NOW! I will tell you some more stories - and post more photos - later.

Jeremiah
