Flat Out Fast!

Well if there was any question as to how fast the AMC was it was answered today at the NMBS finals at Brian Head.

The forecast was for severe thunderstorms and perhaps snow, but the race went on in nice cool weather with some wind.

JHK and I were at it again.

After the neutral roll out I put in a couple of attacks and got the hole shot from Collin Cares. JHK passed at the top and counter attacked hard thru the Lowder Ponds area. I covered the move despite sheep and ATV's in our way, we were flying!!!

I made a small mistake and stuffed my wheel but caught on quickly. A chase could be seen about two minuets back but they were not coming back to us, we were on the attack.

This time I played my cards perfectly and surged for the hole shot to the dreaded Dark Hollow decent. I was on the gas and riding the descent very smooth. JHK caught back on as we finished the gnarly descent. With only four miles left it was a game of cat and mouse thru the feed. I was the cat this time and I sprung two full-out attacks, the second at sprint pace, for the top of the last big climb. I got a small gap but it didn't hold. The plan was to stay aggressive and hope to have a little edge coming into the last trail again but fate would not allow.

As I rocketed down the decent ready for the last tough single track I heard the dreaded his of a blow out. It would not seal! Then after a fast tube fix I hit the front tire with air and there was a hole in the tube!! Rats.

I rode the last 4 miles on the flat front tire. I was slowed down but not defeated and finished 14th.

Not too shabby. Congrats to my Trek/Volkswagen teammates and staff Dusty, Zack and Laura on a great summer campaign of champagne! Ross was 2nd today and Leah was 4th.

TO BE CONTINUED........

High and Fast

Today's NMBS short track in Brian Head, Utah was a blast.

It was my teammate Lea's first short track win. I was proud of how she rode smart and made one sharp move on the back stretch to take the lead from Katerina.

In the men's race I had fun playing out the tactics. A lead group formed and Ryan blew himself out chasing primes. I looked back and was surprised to see none of the favorites. JHK flatted and I guess the Kona boys were a little off pace.

Anyway, Ross took a jump and I was on the back of Collin Cares and Sam Jurekovic. Of course being a NASCAR-like short track I sat on and forced their team to make pace. I definitely made them slow and look over their shoulders to see who was getting the free ride. Part of me wanted to jump across the gap to Ross, but that could backfire.

With two-to-go Sam break checked me on the downhill, letting Collin go free for 60-feet, but I closed the gap quickly. We crossed the line with one-to-go, but with no bell, I was surprised when we finished.

Oh well, an assist and third were pretty cool. Great day for Trek/Volkswagen and the first time we've been able to work as a team to shut down a lead group and own the front of the race.

Fun stuff.

Tomorrow we are expecting temps in the 50's and thunderstorms. They've been talking about an alternate course, but rest assured I'm ready for whatever they throw at us!

Mt Snow

The Trek/VW team director, Michael Browne, joined in the National Championship festivities at Mt Snow. Here's a video of what he saw at the start line of the men's pro race.

This video clip, from Lyle Warner, was captured on one of the technical descents on the Mount Snow cross country course.

That's our first attempt at a video-blog. Stay tuned for a recap from the exciting weekend that's taken place at Sugar Mountain, NC.

Escape from the Inland Empire

Yo,

I just returned from the National Mountain Bike Series stop in L.A. I wouldn't say that it was a perfect weekend, results-wise. Though slowly, things are coming around and I am feeling the signs of super-fitness in there.

What's super fitness? It's when you feel like you're playing with your friends when sprinting and goofing off, attacking just for the fun of it; and it all feels good! You want to go hard because the harder you go, the faster you go. The wind roars past your ears making that sweet sound and the hum of the tires licking the ground. This must be what it feels like for fawn deer to first break stride into a full sprint. I guess deer don't have tires unless they are John Deers. They can lick things though...

I'm not sure what happened on Saturday, because my legs wouldn't go despite my fitness of late being at a top-5 level. I was covered in salt after the event, however I had no cramps. It was probably because it was chilly and cloudy the first two days I was in L.A. and I didn't get in a good "sweat ride" before the races.

By Sunday I got in the groove. I rocketed through the field from a mid pack start that had me at a standstill behind a crash on the second corner. I was in amazement to see way down the second stretch to the pack of lead riders and my teammate "Rad" Ross taking to flight on the doubles in front of everyone. The flashes of cameras were going off, and I cracked up laughing in the middle of the short track because the only time I could see Ross was when he popped up like dolphin jumping out of a sea of riders. Tomac should be proud!

After crossing wheels with Kabush and having to put a foot down, I ended up sixth.

After the race, I was super fired up to slam some tempo on a big climb and convinced our friend Manee the "Tico Gringo" to show Adam Craig, Ross and me the Santa Anna River Trail - a good singletrack trail north of Redlands. What would ensue felt like a great escape from the Inland Empire of concrete, asphalt and sand.

Stay tuned. You will dig the rest of the story. I'll fill you in later with more on our twilight ride after the short track.

Later, man.
Jeremiah
