Rocktown Trails

For those of you who haven't heard the news, Harrisonburg will soon have a new trail system within the city, just down the street from our house at Hillandale Park! Bikers across town are getting excited. There are rumored reports that our favorite IMBA family will relocate nearer to the new riding, and that the sexiest man in the peleton is fast at work buying up soon-to-be prime real estate around the park. After spending time outside of Clemson, in Scott's excellent location on the Issaqueena Trails, I can see what all the fuss is about.

On Thursday afternoon, a nice sized group of about ten of us from the Shenandoah Mountain Bike Club met up for a couple hours of trail work. I'd never before cut new trail while the trees and ground were covered by 3 inches of sleet and hard-packed ice. The scenery and the icy setting provided a novel experience, and the work kept my heart rate and temperature up.

All and all, a fun evening with friends. I look forward to next week's session. That is, of course, if I am anywhere near Harrisonburg by then. Alas, I am still dreaming of 70 degrees and sunny.

Icy Cold

I was back in Virginia for two days and then the ice rolled in.

(Look what I found on the Jetta!)

My nordic attributes might be alluring this time of year, but blue eyes and a fair complexion offer little comfort when the winds chill is 7 degrees.

I won't stay indoors riding the trainer. There is a decision to be made; go skiing or pack up the bikes and drive south?

Columbo's Chicago Style Pizza

The weekly pizza night was moved to Thursday to accomodate both the Wednesday night Clemson b-ball game and our night ride from Scott's house. So, we all had one more day to work up the hunger for all-you-can-eat pizza.

(left to right are Todd "XXX", Nick, Ian, Becky, and Jeff)

Mmm... 12 hours of riding in three days, all-you-can-eat pizza, and a smile on my face.

Training in Clemson

Jeremiah hasn't been blogging, so here's my attempt to pick up the slack.

Here's a pic from the Asheville VeloSports mountain bike camp ride to Pilot Rock in the Pisgah National Forest of North Carolina. It was a cold windy day, but the climb got us warm enough to stand for a group photo at the top. (Jeremiah is center, I'm to the right, wearing the white coat.)

When arctic air was forecast to make a low blow down the east coast, we high-tailed it out of Asheville and headed south to Clemson, SC.

Sucess. After a few relatively cool days, today, temps climbed just below 70 degrees and the waterfalls beside the trails began to look inviting instead of bitter.

I've been riding more than ever before, and most of my adventures have been solo. Some self portraits will have to do.

Yesterday, I spent five fun hours riding the Clemson trails. Jeremiah thinks if he can hold on tight, he'll get towed around.

Tonight, I'm heading out for the first night ride I've done in a long time. I hope I don't get lost in the dark and captured by the rumored witches!
