Bishop Wins Windham Pro XCT, On Top in Series

From Team SHO-AIR/Cannondale, July 1, 2013 – Jeremiah Bishop (Harrisonburg, VA, SHO-AIR/Cannondale Team) took a convincing win ahead of Todd Wells and Derek Zandstra in a stacked field for the men’s USA Cycling Pro Cross Country Tour race held at Windham Mountain in New York.

Right from the gun of the six lap affair, Bishop drove the pace with Specialized rider Todd Wells and BMC rider Stephen Ettigner, getting quick separation on the pack. Only two laps into the race, Bishop whittled the forty-rider field down to just Wells with his constant pressure at the front, leaving Stephen Ettinger to dangle off the duo by 10 seconds.

The Bishop-Wells battle continued to rage on, lap after lap on the former World Cup course; with each rider testing one another on different sections of the course trying to expose any weakness. However the two were rarely more than a bike length apart, as they waged their own private battle on the slopes of Windham Mountain.

As the two headed out onto lap five of the six lap race, Bishop drilled it up one of the courses many steep climbs and beat Wells into a very technical wooded section, left wet and muddy from recent rains earlier in the week. From there JB let his Scalpel 29 work the most demanding sections of the course to slowly inch away from Wells.

Heading out onto the last lap, Bishop had broken the elastic and was clear from Wells by over forty seconds. With half a lap to go, Jeremiah backed it down at the advice of team director Ty Kady in order to protect the equipment and insure him and the team the victory, along with the series points leads.

As he crosses the finish line, Bishop remembers South African rider Burry Stander – winner of the 2012 Windham World Cup.

With his win, Bishop catapulted to the top of the series standings taking over the number one plate by sixty points with only two rounds left to go in the series.

Post-race, Bishop had this to say,“Windham is a really good course for me and the conditions today fit the Scalpel 29 and Maxxis tires to perfection. I wanted to rebound strong after dodging a bullet last weekend. I don’t want to win this series by merely taking second’s and thirds, I want to win! A special shout out to team owner Scott Tedro who’s at home recovering from a foot injury. This win is dedicated to him.”

Bishop Sprints for Silver at Pro XCT Season Opener Mellow Johnny’s Classic

Dripping Springs, Texas – On Saturday, March 2, Flat Creek Crossing Ranch was the venue for the season-opening race of the Pro Mountain Bike Cross Country Series (Pro XCT) – the Subaru of Georgetown Mellow Johnny’s Classic. The spring weather welcomed racers to test their fitness against the best riders from North America. But, it was a surprise showing from Australian Dan McConnell that had racers up against another with late-summer fitness instead!

Aboard his 2013 Cannondale Scalpel 29, Jeremiah Bishop showed he’s the North American to emerge from the winter with the best early-season racing form. The race played out to be Bishop vs. everyone else. One at at time, and often in teams of two, the other racers took turns trying to end Bishop’s dominance at the front of the race. In the end, Bishop was able to leave the entire field in the Texas dust – with the exception of McConnell. With 400-meters to go, the Australian had more kick left in his legs and got the best of Bishop in a sprint across the finish line.

As McConnell departs the U.S., Bishop will enter the next round of the Pro XCT Series as the virtual leader.

The Pro XCT Series resumes March 16 at the US Cup Cannondale Triple Crown – Bonelli Park in San Dimas, California.

California Dreaming

I’ve not ridden outside in a week. Down with a nasty bug, I could complain about my 90-minute riding week and how out of shape I might be, etc. But rather it gave me a little time to reflect on the hectic exciting week of team training and bonding at the Sho-Air/Cannondale Team Camp in Santa Anna Hills, California.

Due to important and exciting developments at Sho-Air’s corporate HQ we had a change of plans to move our camp from the original ride destination of Santa Cruz. I was bummed at first since I’d done a bit of route prep and my mental mojo was going towards the initial plan.

Once we were settled, our camp took shape but so did some of the personalities of the team. Pua the super-food eater likes early rides, solo missions and yoga. Max likes to kick it pretty relaxed and have a beer with dinner now and then. Alex, well Alex loves long rides and eating treats that would have me racing Clydesdale by March! Not like total junk – just Trader Joe’s cookies and those chocolate peanut butter cups made with dark chocolate. Hmmm… Me; I drink too much coffee and need to put my dishes out of their misery or I forget they exist as my mind jumps right to the next day’s route.

Our rides were a sampling of some good SoCal trails; near the Vision Quest course http://www.warriorssociety.org/events/vision_quest_general_info.html, Holy Jim, Upper Trabuco Canyon, San Juan Trail the oaks or Santiago Oaks Park. www.mountainbikebill.com is a cool site I found to help sleuth out single track. Later in the week, we hit GMR or Glendora Mountain Road and Mt Baldy. I even did the Canyon Velo Group Ride on my mountain bike (not a good idea unless you want to do 400+ on every hill).

We had great team dinners, and enjoyed some of Pua’s amazing whole-food, raw, organic, super-food cooking. Talked trail, surf and fishing talk with Max, and exciting conversations with Ty and Scott about the big year ahead and all the race choices we have. Meeting up with mechanics Jordi and Paul allowed us to hang out and get used to working together and make plans for the season – and of course just have a good time riding and prepping for the adventure ahead.

Some of the riders had fits done by the ever knowledgeable and highly entertaining sage of spin Thom Coleman. Others trolled the Internet, as cyclists with idle time are known to do. We all watched the train wreck of Doprah.

We also had a great time meeting and learning more about the nutrition and science inside Osmo from Ben Capron. In a nutshell: it’s faster at what it does so if you like going fast… Check it.

I even learned a taste for coconut while in SoCal. I guess you never know what the future holds I used not like the stuff but now it taste great sometimes ya just have to try something new! I had a good time at camp and locked down some great training.

Should be super cool to start the season off on a good foot.

Thanks to Ty Kady and Scott Tedro for putting the camp together and giving us the tools to hammer!

– Jeremiah
